Aug 23, 2021 Season 3 Episode 135
Gilbert Ornelas, Joe Giglia, Leroy 'Chav" Chavez, Luis Gonzalez, Manuel 'Manano' Grateron, Eric Aragon

You hear over and over again about the major events or actions needed to successfully harvest an elk with archery equipment; how to get a response,... what a setup is,... knowing your effective range,... and then make a killing shot. Step 1, then 2, then 3 and finally four and BULL DOWN! If ONLY it happened that way! But what about all the variables leading to, or in between those steps? It's those "unknowns" not talked about from one step to the other that we are missing. Well, y'all... let's see if we can help with that!

It's Part 2 of our next series: Archery Elk Hunting From Response to Release... Connecting the dots! The goal of this episode is to help you fill in some of those gaps and we begin by talking about things that happen between creating a set-up and an elk coming into range.
Just a few of the topics:

  • What is the difference between a good and a bad set-up? What am I looking for?
  • Does it change with a two person team?
  • What exactly is a “Stop & Scan” spot?
  • How should I position myself according to the wind?
  • Can I make noise when setting up?
  • Should I take my pack off where I set up?
  • Can I move my feet or body with an elk within sight?
  • How do I keep from making noise if I move?
  • Should I hide behind a tree?
  • How far should I be from my backdrop?
  • What if cover is really limited?
  • How should my bow be positioned?

We hope you enjoy the episode.
